"Gezellig" (cosy), I said to my Cypriot friends by the sea. They tried to repeat me, but each time we laughed together about how they pronounced this tricky Dutch word. "What does it mean?" And after my explanation, they said, "That sounds like the place of Marina Sofocleous." Or five beautiful apartments called Leonidas Village Houses.
I jumped up and ten minutes later I drove into the village of Ghoudi. Leonidas Village Houses is on the outskirts of this picturesque village with a beautiful view over the valleys with orange trees. Through the gate you enter Marina's realm. The 19th century houses around the pool have recently been renovated and turned into lovely apartments. And like many Cypriots, the pride of their island is reflected here: in the authentic materials, natural stone, those beautiful natural colours and that dark wood. You can sleep in a four-poster bed and look out over the rolling countryside through the wooden shutters. Yet it is also modern, comfortable and, yes, very homely. This is where you want to come in and stay. After a look around with great stories from Marina, I decided to do just that.
And now I am lying by the pool. The other guests chat, play in the water or dream away in the sun. Marina comes running up and asks if I'm all settled in. I nod and then she asks: "How about a cup of coffee tonight?" I smile and can only reply: "That would be great!"
