Kefalonia is one of the lesser known Ionian Islands of Greece. Between us, that is completely unjustified. It is an island that lends itself perfectly to a week away, a voyage of discovery or a nice beach holiday. In the impressive Ãenos Mountains you will find rare flowers and plants and even wild horses. I discovered during my holiday on Kefalonia stalactite caves with such large, subterranean halls that concerts are held there. And let me say nothing about the quiet bays with idyllic beaches, peaceful villages and cosy tavernas in breath-taking locations. Who knows, maybe Kefalonia will remain beautifully unspoiled.
What makes Kefalonia so suitable for a small holiday are the authentic homes and apartments that can be found there. Many of them have truly magnificent sea views which you can stare at until late in the evening. It is therefore a romantic destination for a wedding trip. Together you can enjoy privacy and tranquillity in a luxury villa or romantic hotel.
My holiday locations in the Greek Islands are small and have limited places available. Would you like to book a sunny holiday to Kefalonia? Then quickly ensure yourself of a unique spot away from the crowd! Be sure to check out my new discoveries or last minute holidays to Greece.
Good to know: a flight to Kefalonia is always including car rental and accommodation.
As many names Kefalonia has (Cephallenia, Cephallonia, Kefallinia or Kefallonia), so many reasons I have to love this island. I can never get enough of the colourful mountain villages with their cute little harbours during a roundtrip. The clear blue water together with the light of the sun creates a magical spectacle in the caves of Kefalonia. Famous caves are the Melissani and the Drogarati cave, I give you as a holiday tip to definitely visit.
For a holiday by the sea, I can also recommend Kefalonia as a holiday destination. The water is so clear that you can spot many beautiful things here. In the capital Argostoli you can see the sea turtles that come to the harbour every morning to eat the remains of the fishing boats. This alone is reason enough to visit Kefalonia!
Of all the cuisines in the Mediterranean, the Greek one still manages to surprise me. The Greeks keep on reinventing themselves, I found out during my last, short holiday to Kefalonia. I was island hopping and ended up from Zakynthos back on my familiar island. I enjoyed the most delicious savoury pies, made with fresh ingredients such as spinach, meat, leeks, octopus and cod. Also the aliada, a dish with boiled octopus, garlic and mashed potatoes tastes good here. The desserts here are really finger-licking good, like pasteli or caramelized snacks. Or try mantoles, sweets made from almonds and sugar.
Kefalonia has warm, dry summers with temperatures around 30 degrees. This makes the Greek island a great destination for a summer holiday where you can sit on the beach with your feet in the water. It is also lovely to stay at one of my exclusive locations with a swimming pool. For an active holiday, the months of April, May and September are ideal to travel to Kefalonia. It is less warm then but still quite dry. The winter is cooler and it can also rain a lot.
