When you find yourself in one of the most beautiful spots on the island, on top of a hill, by the edge of a forest and with the most stunning panoramic views of the sea... Well, that’s when you realise how marvellous the power of Mother Nature can be. When he discovered this location, the owner Yiannis thought to himself: who wouldn’t want to wake up here every day of their holiday on Kefalonia? Right next to the centuries-old threshing floor, he built four small studios and a villa. He called his creation the Aloni Cottages. Built in the style of the island, with natural materials and picturesque as can be. His tavern is nearby, where he prepares the most delicious Greek meals with local ingredients in his wood oven.
’A way of life’, Yiannis said when we passed the swimming pool and I stopped once again to relish the silence and the view of the sea. Just getting to this place had been a joy. Past dense, hilly forests with open spots that force you to stop and absorb the beauty. ‘The furniture was made nearby, environmentally friendly and in the style of the island.’ I smiled. I needed some more time to decide what beautiful natural stone cottage would be mine for the holiday, so we decided to go for a bite.
Yiannis shovelled some tomatoes from his own garden into the wood oven as I lingered on his ‘environmentally friendly’ comment. There’s just no way around it here. The beauty, so natural. So serene. A deep sigh escaped my lungs. ‘I will go for the cottage with the patio that overlooks the forests and the sea. With the green shutters and thick stone walls.’ Yiannis gave me his thumbs up. Delicious aromas were tickling my nose. ‘A beautiful way of life it is!’, I laughed and returned the thumbs up.
