Since my very first trip to Kefalonia, I always make sure to visit owner Yiannis in his tavern for a drink. But I had never stayed at one of the cottages on his ranch before, and that was about to change.

Ranzo Ionio is a gorgeous location surrounded by olive groves with a view of the Ionian Sea. As I drove onto the estate, I recognised it immediately: the small tavern was on the left by the original wood oven, with the swimming pool and loungers just behind it. The apartments were just up ahead, as were the natural stone cottages where I would be spending the night. Gorgeously renovated with a modern interior, attention to detail and a balcony with the most stunning panoramic sea view.

Yiannis always wants the very best for his guests. I dropped my bag inside and went looking for him. He was standing outside in the sun by his two authentic stone ovens together with the entire Kavvadia family. I couldn’t wait to enjoy his cooking magic. He prepares the most mouth-watering traditional dishes in his stone ovens. With fresh ingredients, such flavours! His other family members are equally impressive: his wife Stella bakes the best bread on the island and his sons serve delicious drinks at the tavern. ‘Come, eat with us’, Yiannis said, which is exactly what I wanted to hear.

The best way to discover your destination is by car!
