I smiled: ‘I'm as happy as the sea is deep’. A hint of romance, the most delicious home-made Greek dishes, the beach in my backyard, eternal serenity and my very own pastel-coloured villa in the evening sun. And there’s something special about the salt... Where am I? At Remetzo Villas.
Right by the sandy Vrahinari Beach, I had found the tavern of the Remoudis family. ‘That’s the place to go for a taste of real natural salt’, people had told me on the village square of Lixouri. I got comfy under the pergola and tried Katarina’s Greek mezze. I smiled with every bite. Because of the flavours as well as the sea in front of me, calmly swaying with the wind. ‘Here is our bread with olive oil, tomatoes, feta, oregano and our famous afrala’, Katarina had smiled. ‘We source the sea salt from the rocks ourselves.’ The first bite was all it took to become a believer. As the wind was caressing my hair and I had just realised that my day had been made already, Katarina said: ‘Have you seen our villas?’
I found them a few minutes away from the tavern: pastel-coloured, comfortable villas, built and designed in the style of the island. As I opened the doors to the garden and the roofed patio, I heard the silence and saw a private pool shimmering in the sun. And an outdoor shower for the necessary freshening up.
I ended up spending a whole week there. Every morning I would greet Katarina with the words: ‘This place makes me as happy as the sea is deep!’ I should know because I smiled at the Ionian Sea from my villa every day. Truly: you will never run out of happiness here.
