A century ago, Marina’s grandfather bought a piece of land with olive groves and breathtaking views of the sea. When her mother got married, he gave her the land as a wedding gift. Each year, Marina’s parents would take her there to harvest the olives. The place enchanted her. Though Marina ended up living in Athens, she never stopped dreaming. Of a country house with flapping white sheets for shade. Wooden furniture, a swimming pool by the patio and lounge spots for many hours of gazing. The garden would be filled with centuries-old olive trees and lawns with blossoming flowers. A little restaurant serving delicious, honest food and apartments designed in a natural style. Years later, Marina married Mpampis. And what was her mother’s wedding gift? You guessed it. From father to daughter, from mother to Marina. And from Marina to her guests, including yours truly. I could not believe my eyes. A deep sigh of intense, intense joy.
