As the night began to fall, I arrived at Alonia Villas. I parked my car and sat down in the grass to wait for the owner, Spyros. This spot offers a magnificent view of the mountains of Zakynthos and the surrounding mountain villages in the distance. Twinkling in the dusk, a sea of lights illuminated the olive trees on the hills with a golden hue.
’Can you believe that all of this was just vineyards twenty years ago,?’, I heard Spyros say behind me. He must have seen me dream away in the grass. ‘This estate has been in my family for many generations. They used to cultivate raisins here. The ‘Alonia’ fields were right where you’re sitting, drying the raisins in the sun. Raisin farms have become rare on Zakynthos, but we’ve got plenty of olives, as you can see. My wife and I wanted to give this place a beautiful new purpose; which is how we came up with the idea of Alonia Villas. Enough history though, are you ready for the grand tour?’, Spyros asked. ‘Yes, please!’, I answered with a smile.
When we arrived at the villa, I could not believe my eyes. Everything was so gorgeous! ‘The villas were built with traditional techniques and elements, and fitted with modern facilities all around’, Spyros explained. The place breathes good taste, undoubtedly his and his wife’s. A perfect combination of a modern interior with rural details. Stone walls, beautiful wooden floors and tables made of old pallets. With the enthusiasm of a young child, I flew from one room to the next.
And just when I thought this couldn’t possibly get any better, I noticed the garden. I stepped outside where a green lawn welcomed me with a smile. The garden is huge, just like the swimming pool in the centre. Cosy seating areas are scattered around the place for some comfy relaxation. Luckily, I had brought enough books to try each and every seating area!
