Zakynthos; the island of long sandy beaches, azure sea, the famous shipwreck and the colourful flowers. I've seen it all, but there's one thing missing from my list. And those are the Caretta-Caretta sea turtles! I've been coming to this island for so long, but I've never seen these beautiful critters up close. When I heard from a good friend that he had discovered a new location, I did not have to think long. I booked a ticket right away!
And here I am, on my beloved island, looking for the new location with the sea turtles in mind. The location I am looking for is called "Stefania Apartments" and is named after the owner. It doesn't take long before I see a yellow-coloured building. When I get closer I see two people waving. This must be it! When I get out of the car I am enthusiastically welcomed by Stefania and Charis, the owners of this beautiful place. "Welcome Eliza!" says Stefania. "Give your suitcase to me, because you must be tired" says Charis. I walk behind Charis and Stefania towards the tavern which is next to Stefania Apartment. We sit down at one of the tables and order a Frappé. This is a Greek iced coffee and perfect for such a hot day as this. The tavern is nicely situated at the waterfront and from here you have a wonderful view over the sea. We start chatting and Stefania and Charis tell me everything about this area.
After a while I ask Stefania and Charis if they have ever seen a Carreta-Caretta turtle. Stefania starts to smile. Yes!" she says radiantly. Stefania explains that the best time to spot turtles is May to October. "Don't go to the island of Marathonissi tomorrow, Eliza," she says. There's a pretty good chance of spotting them while snorkelling here," she says. I immediately start to smile. "That sounds like a good idea," I say. The wind brushes through my hair and I take another sip of my iced coffee. For a moment I close my eyes and dream away at the thought that tomorrow I will finally see a little turtle. I am glad to be back in Zakynthos!
