‘Feel free to look around, and if you need any fresh vegetables, take a look behind the villa! The owner said as I was about to enter the apartment. This new villa is something else! Agrikia Villas is hidden in the mountains, by the edge of town. One villa with three apartments built in a traditional style with natural materials. The villa is perched up against the mountain and surrounded by a gorgeous panoramic view of the valley that stretches all the way down to the coast. ‘Cosy!’ I sighed as I looked around inside. The fireplace and homey rural interior made me feel at ease right away. ‘I'm in for a relaxing week!’
Except for that evening, because I had some active plans up my sleeve. I was roaming the vegetable garden with a cookbook in hand. I had decided to park my curiosity about the island for the time being and said yes to an invitation to join some villagers for a barbecue that night. I promised to bring a side dish and was lucky to get some help in the kitchen: I was going to make papoutsakia, a local speciality of stuffed eggplant. All I needed now was an eggplant! ‘Who would've thought’, I grinned to myself. ‘Picking vegetables during my holiday!’
Content and satiated, I followed up the delicious meal with a glass of Salamos on a comfy lounger by the edge of the pool. Such silence, all I could hear was the rustling of olive trees. I was day dreaming into the distance when I noticed the dusk was setting in. Twinkling lights appeared around the olive fields and along the coastline. Now that’s what I call paradise!
