Curious about how people celebrate Christmas in other parts of Europe? The Christmas holidays are the ideal time to soak up some sun in other European countries and get a taste of the local traditions and customs. So, for example, I discovered that Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) is the most important part of Christmas in Spain, and that turrón is served as a traditional Christmas dessert. I also learned that no Portuguese Christmas menu is complete without a bolo rei cake and that in Cyprus, a Christmas cake called Christopsomo is often served. If you’re in Italy around this time of year, do attend mass at the Vatican – it’s a spectacle! There’s so much more to discover when you head for the sunshine at Christmas!
This year, the UK Christmas school holidays will fall between 19 December 2022 and 2 January 2023.

A sunny holiday in December always feels special somehow. I often think back to a Christmas break in Madeiraa few years ago. The capital,Funchal, was beautifully decorated with lights and Christmas trees -what a pleasant sight! On 23 December, the streets filled with people dancing and partying on the Mercado dos Lavradores, Funchal's well-known market. But, perhaps I was most impressed by the spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks show. I'm already looking forward to spending another week in Madeira over the festive season! Although, you shouldn’t be too surprised if I end up partying in the Algarve or Costa de Lisboa instead!
Going on holiday during the Christmas period is always a unique experience in Spain. Regions such as Andalusia become even more colourful during this time of year and islands such as Gran Canaria and Lanzarote come to life.
