The scenery around the valley of Terral Cantara is the stuff of dreams. Where nature and silence reign. Full of enthusiasm, I drove my rental car up the meandering little roads in the mountains of Sicily. I could see Il Poggio Luxury Country Resort in the distance. Marco and the young Tiziana were waiting for me at their small agriturismo on the hill.
Getting there is so much fun, the meandering roads in the mountains turn the unknown into something pleasant. I couldn’t wait to roll up my sleeves and help around their botanical gardens, vineyards and fruit orchards. Marco was right. The Il Poggio mansion has preserved its authentic style. Marco gave me a tour of the stunning rooms and their authentic elements: Italian chairs, rugs, draped curtains, curls and pillars. What a gem.
After the tour, we walked around the botanical garden, vineyards and fruit orchards. Marco asked if I was hungry. On Sicily, a lot of love passes through the stomach. The entire family was ready at the table in the garden. Madre, the mother of the family, had prepared some simple but fresh dishes with ingredients from the land. The tomatoes tasted like the Sicilian sun and the home-made wine was delicious. I relished the magnificent food and pleasant conversation with the family. Tiziana told me that the island’s best chocolate is made in the nearby town of Modica. I smiled because that is exactly what life on Sicily is like: smell, look and experience. And so I got into the car, off to the famous chocolate of Modica.
