"Tito, mangiare qui?" madre called from the balcony on the courtyard. My eyes lit up. Such folklore! Where was I? At Azienda Duca di Castelmonte, a centuries-old colourful farm where the true Italian lifestyle is still commonplace. Owner Toto laughed. "Will you join us for dinner? My mother is cooking for everyone. And we only use products from our own land." I recalled the olive groves, citrus orchards and fresh tomatoes. "I’d love to!" I smiled.
Near Trapani, in the inlands, I found the warm atmosphere of the Curatolo family’s agriturismo. I quickly realised that this azienda is a feast for the eyes. The terracotta and yellow walls, bright blue shutters, blossoming garden and all those trinkets thanks to the centuries-old family traditions. Toto had just shown me pictures of how they used to eat in the courtyard. The mother, brother and sister still live there to this day. "We want to stimulate all senses," Toto said as we walked to the apartments through the large garden, passing the chapel and the pool. "These used to be cattle stables. And today, you get to sleep there," he laughed. In the shade of the tree, I found the same warm and traditional style. I was only allowed to drop my bag, because there was a lot more to see. Toto showed me their chickens, peacocks and the other animals. And a perfect place for kids: the playground. I smiled: what was that delicious aroma?
"Mi madre is done!" I wanted to run to the restaurant, a place where I’d be eating often. The more Sicilian, the better. I couldn’t wait to experience it all.
