From my car, I can't help but stare. The Maltese landscape looks impressive! Hilly, green, with ever-changing looking houses. I can see a village in the distance, a lot higher than the main road I'm driving on. I decide to explore this village. When I get closer, I see that it is called L-Gharb. I decide to get out and stroll through the old town. The old houses with their centuries-old facades are striking. In a side street, I walk past a small studio. A man is busy behind his desk. My curiosity wins out and I step inside. He looks up, greets me and tells me that he is busy making a 'L-Gharb blade', the traditional sharp knife that originated in this village. l-Gharb is home to blacksmiths, locksmiths, carpenters and masters of thatchery" explains the friendly man. "If you walk a little further, you will come across many more crafts!"
The chat with the man aroused my curiosity even more. I want to know more about this, I want to stay here for a few more days! I decide to look for a lovely place in the neighbourhood. When I express my wishes to an old man sitting on a bench, he assures me that I must be just outside the village. "Carini!" he shouts.
A few metres outside the centre of L-Gharb looms a large building. I drive up and soon realise that this is Carini Farmhouses, the place the man was talking about. Wow! I ask if there is still a place for me and yes, there is! A few minutes later, I am standing in my own villa, with a private swimming pool and a view of the artisan village and the vast Gozo countryside. I am going to enjoy myself here for the next few days, I know straightaway...
