When you first see the authentic cottages at Aldeia da Mata Pequena, it is difficult to believe this was a ruin just a couple of years ago. When Ana and Diogo stumbled upon the weathered village, it was love at first sight. Diogo is a restorer by profession and his imagination was triggered right away. To bring the town back to its original state and covert it to a rural holiday destination; it became their new goal in life. And they've done it! Walking up the stone steps, you’d think the cottages have always been there, proud and beaming in the green landscape.
Each cottage is unique and I walked around with amazement in my eyes. One is made of natural stone, the next plastered in white with blue or yellow details. Wooden windows with shutters are surrounded by elegant bougainvilleas while the surrounding green and golden hills brighten the scene. Ana had spotted me and approached with a glass of port. She showed me around the cottages. Each one was decorated with love, with antique furniture collected from friends in the area and some of them even stemming from their own childhood. I could listen to Ana’s stories about this place for hours. Their unique holiday location brings the past to life.
We went back outside and I took a deep breath while gazing into the landscape in front of me. The air is so fresh and clean. ‘Isn’t it beautiful’, Ana said. ‘This view just never gets old’. I was in for a magnificent holiday...
