I was enjoying the setting sun by the edge of a nine-metre-long swimming pool, catching my breath after an afternoon of shopping in Funchal, when I suddenly heard footsteps behind me. It was Eva, the owner of Calhau Grande, working her vegetable garden. She is very passionate about nature and obviously has green fingers. With a heart of gold, she truly goes the extra mile to please me and the other guests.
Truth be told, it didn’t take much because Calhau Grande is so unique, it does most of the heavy lifting. Just the location alone: surrounded by nature, perched on a mountain at 300 metres above sea level! Whether you look left or right; there is always a spectacular sea view. Combined with the gorgeous garden filled with fruit trees, colourful, fragrant flowers and utter peace and quiet, this place is absolutely perfect and unique. The nearest village is called Arco da Calheta. It is part of the town of Calheta where you'll also find the beach. From the comfort of my lounger, I was observing the sailors out on the water and the tricks they were pulling to keep their boats going in the right direction. What a sight. For the next couple of days, I rented a bicycle to explore the area by myself. I rode by the coast, made a long tour through the rugged mountains and saw flowers everywhere!
My final morning would be all about helping Eva in her vegetable garden. I caught myself enjoying it more and more, took a deep sigh and realised I would be missing all of this very much...
