"Do you believe in fairytales, Eliza?" Joaquim asked while speeding ahead without waiting for an answer. I was almost running just to keep up. I had met him on Madeira a few months earlier while surfing. Joaquim had told me about Casas da Levada, his latest project. He was still renovating at the time and his enthusiastic stories had triggered my curiosity. I couldn’t wait to see it with my own eyes and decided to visit as soon as I could.
After a short walk, a grey stone building emerged in front of us. There was a swimming pool in front of the building, surrounded by fruit trees and plants. I turned around to find an endless view of the sea. A fairytale indeed: a round wooden door, paths made of tree trunks, a kitchen with diamond-pattern cloths covering the cabinets and a sink with an old-fashioned tap. The bedrooms were carefully decorated and breathed that fairytale atmosphere: shutters in front of the windows, homey rugs on the floor and high ceilings with wooden beams. Joaquim asked if I wanted to see the newborn goat and rabbits recently adopted by Casas da Levada, and I couldn’t wait. If I had to name this fairytale, it would be ‘the cottage of joy’.
