Soft grass was tickling my feet. I was in the garden of my latest discovery, Sossego da Lata in northern Portugal. All I could see was greenery all the way up to the horizon. The wind was caressing the trees. I heard some birds chirping in the distance and nothing else. Such serenity!
My rumbling stomach reminded me to return to the apartment. Just as I was contemplating what to make for dinner, Joaquim approached me from the vegetable garden. He must have noticed the hungry expression on my face. ‘Would you like to join us for dinner, Eliza?’ He was holding cabbage, tomatoes and potatoes in his hands and I couldn’t help but imagine what Portuguese delicacies he was about to prepare.
Before long, I was enjoying delicious home-made caldo verde with Joaquim and his wife Elsa. I looked around, smiling, while relishing the tasteful Portuguese kale soup. Hospitable owners, a unique holiday location where traditional and modern meet and all of that combined with delicious food. What more could I wish for?
