A beam of light peeped into the room through my curtains. I slowly crawled out of my silky soft bed and opened the door of the apartment where I had been spending a couple of days. I was surprised by the soothing sound of chirping birds and took a deep breath. The fresh fragrance of flowers entered my nose. I must’ve stood there for a couple of minutes. Ah, the bliss of silence...
I fixed myself some breakfast on the private patio at Quinta da Bouca d’Arques. The friendly owners Joao and Ana had readied everything for me in the fridge. From juice to plums, melon and jam! I sat down on the private patio and recalled my conversations with Joao and Ana the day before. About their life on this centuries-old Portuguese farm. ‘This place has been in my family for generations', Joao had told me while I was enjoying some red wine on the terrace of their ochre yellow home. ‘It was basically set in stone that I would be inheriting the guest house one day. Now that I have, I realise how lucky we are with this amazing life at such a remarkable location’. After breakfast, I decided it was time for a challenge. Joao had recommended me to explore the area on foot. ‘The surroundings of Quita da Bouca d’Arques consist of gorgeous forests. You'll have no less than 40,000 square metres of forest at your disposal! Beautiful hikes all over the place, Eliza. You'll find large chestnut trees and huge boulders covered in moss’, Joao was right. I saw trees I had never seen before. Once again, surrounded by the pleasant chirping of birds. So much silence!
When I came back to my holiday residence at the end of the afternoon, I took a dip in the chlorine-free swimming pool of Quinta da Bouca d’Arques. Joao waved at me. With the sun on my face, I soaked in the memories I had made the days before. I hope this family tradition will continue for many generations to come...
