I was still reminiscing the day before when I was hiking the El Caminito del Rey, one of the most remarkable places to visit during a holiday in Andalusia. The path takes you over the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes cliff. The height is impressive and the view magnificent. I felt like a true adventurer!
I was relaxing by the bright blue swimming pool at B&B Cortijo Vista Álora together with my Spanish friend Maria to catch our breath after our hike. Peeping through my sunglasses, I enjoyed the waving palm trees and the Spanish architecture of the 200-year-old Cortijo. The owner, Hanneke, approached us with two drinks on a tray. ‘May I offer you a welcome drink, Eliza and Maria? The Dutch owner asked. ‘It’s fresh orange juice sourced right here!’, Hanneke was referring to the stunning garden we were in, the pride of Cortijo Vista Alora. There are over fifty palm trees as well as olive, lemon, fig and orange trees. The garden offers a panoramic view of the mountains and Álora. I couldn’t wait for sunset because Hanneke had promised for the town’s castle to be beautifully lit in the dark.
Hanneke gave us a tour of the Cortijo. The garden’s tropical atmosphere is reflected in the interior. The rooms are vibrant and light with a lot of natural materials. ‘A combination of Moorish style and bohemian details’, Hanneke told us with pride in her voice. The sun was now setting. Maria and I decided to enjoy the view from the private patio before heading out to Bellavista for dinner. And there they were, behind the palm leaves, the lights of the castle. I had found myself in a tropical paradise...
