Hacienda Guaro Viejo

When I opened my window shutters in the morning, the autumn sun was cheerfully shining. In the distance, I could see the mountain tops of Sierra de las Nieves. I would've just stood there for hours admiring the breathtaking view if not for the promise of a delicious breakfast ahead.

The Belgian owners Lars and Silvie had picked just the right spot. Hacienda Guaro Viejo is their dream come true. After years of experience in the travel industry, they were now ready to provide a magnificent holiday to all their guests. A lot had changed since my last visit. They had put a lot of effort into creating a common room where I was about to be treated to a lavish, typically Spanish breakfast with a magnificent view. As Silvie was serving breakfast, I learned another thing or two about the typical Andalusian eating habits.

After my delicious meal, I sank into a lounger by the pool and grabbed my book. Manning the bar, Lars brought me some Tinto de Verano, how refreshing!

A deep sigh escaped my lungs. Lovely! This was going to be one lazy day. I had spent a couple of days roaming around the streets and climbing countless steps in towns such as Antequera, Ronda and Mijas. It was well worth the effort. Each and every one of these towns is remarkable. You'll find the authentic Spanish atmosphere and overwhelming hospitality wherever you look. I was so caught up in my book that I hadn’t noticed how Silvie had snuck up to me. ‘Enjoying your book?’, she laughed. I looked up startled. The story was so thrilling that I had completely forgotten everything around me. She asked if I had any plans for the evening. Apparently, there would be a famous festival in a nearby town called Guaro that weekend. She urged me to go.

And what a golden tip it turned out to be! After the sun had set, the town was atmospherically lit by tens of thousands of candles. How romantic! Almost like a fairytale. Completely lost for words, I was happy to find the silence interrupted by the sound of Spanish music. The festivities had begun!
