Every now and then, I will find a remarkable holiday location. As I was driving through the stunning landscape of Andalusia, past white towns and olive groves, I noticed a sign by the side of the road that said Cortijo La Haza Bed & Breakfast. It sparked my curiosity and I couldn’t help but take the turn.
The white building of Cortijo La Haza stands out among the green mountainous landscape. I entered the white gate and noticed a swimming pool in the distance with a gorgeous view of the mountains behind it. I couldn’t wait to dream away with a good book after a refreshing dip. The Dutch owner Bernadette gave me a warm welcome and asked if I needed anything. I was overwhelmed by the beautiful surroundings and serenity. Just what I was looking for! My stomach was rumbling and I asked Bernadette for a table at the restaurant. She walked me to my table while telling me the story of Cortijo La Haza. Together with her husband Patriek, she converted the 250-year-old olive farm to a relaxing holiday destination for guests. Patriek has a passion for cooking and prepares the most delicious food in the kitchen. I took a bite of my Carrillada, a traditional pork cheek stew. Absolutely mouthwatering. Hmmm, Spanish flavours with a touch of Belgium!
After my satisfying meal, Bernadette gave me the grand tour. The Cortijo breathes that typical Spanish atmosphere. As we entered one of the rooms, I was struck by the homeliness of it all. Bernadette promised me a spectacular view of the sunrise from the balcony. And an equally impressive starry sky at night. ‘Would you like to stay here, Eliza?’, Bernadette asked. I could see myself spending a couple of days by the pool enjoying the magnificent view and took her up on the invitation.
