A cast-iron knocker hit the impressive front door with a loud bang. A small inner door inside the large door opened and two Dutch blue eyes appeared: ‘Good morning! Welcome to Torre Nova!’ I entered a majestic hallway where all kinds of old machinery from the region is on display. ‘Don’t worry, you won’t be expected to work!’, Jacqueline laughed when she saw the expression on my face. ‘Life is one big party here, plus: the original residents didn’t work either!’.
‘So, he built this mansion because he envied his older brother?’, I asked. I was sitting in a shaded spot in the garden with the Dutch owners Jacqueline and Geert and took a sip of my cava while absorbing my surroundings. Geert had just told me all about the history of the mansion. When the count of Gironella passed away, his eldest son inherited the village castle, the Torre of Claramunt. His younger brother was so upset that he built this Catalonian villa to rival his brother’s estate. ‘He called it Torre Nova, the new tower, but forgot to add an actual tower!’, Geert laughed as he pointed at the the village castle through an opening in the garden wall.
Tower or not, this place will leave you feeling like an aristocrat. It wasn't hard for me to picture how the “Grandeza de España” used to celebrate life here. At the same time, I felt right at home in this large Mediterranean garden with its large swimming pool with loungers, hammock and where you get to pick the fruits right off the trees. Not to mention the mansion's interior, which is equally impressive with its tall ceilings with authentic wooden beams, large windows with shutters and a stylish décor. A perfect combination of authentic and contemporary, the mansion breathes space and comfort. And the windows reveal a view of a Mediterranean Spanish village. I was laying in bed one night when I realised that the nights in Catalonia are still the way there were intended to be: quiet, dark and with a magnificent starry sky... A perfect place to withdraw while celebrating life every day!
