I was driving through the green hills near the romantic town of Xerta. Suddenly, Villa Retiro appeared in an oasis of lush greenery. The owners had not exaggerated: with its red towers and battlements, white pillars and tall windows, it really does look like a castle!
At the entrance, I was greeted by two lion statues that seem to be guarding the lavish villa. As I stepped onto the marble floor inside, my eyes were drawn to a spiralling staircase and artful balustrades. The rooms are located on the top floor and come equipped with all the luxury one could possibly wish for. The beds look so comfortable that I had to resist the temptation to lay down and pretend I was sleeping beauty in my very own castle. The owner told me that the house is also known as the 'Millionaire home' because it used to belong to a rich family. How lovely that this magnificent place is now open to guests!
The owner took me to the garden that kept surprising me wherever I looked. So much green, it was like I had walked straight into a film. The hotel boasts a large collection of exotic plants and trees. Much of which was brought to Spain all the way from Argentina. The garden contains a gorgeous large swimming pool with a magnificent waterfall. I could stroll around this place for hours.
I would check out the spa later on, which offers all kinds of baths, saunas and massages. Followed by dinner at the hotel restaurant. The hotel is ran by chef Fran Lopez and was awarded a Michelin star. My very first holiday location with a Michelin-star restaurant! A mouth-watering promise.

You'll find the restaurant at Villa Retiro between the tropical palm trees. A meal prepared by chef Fran Lopez will make you feel like a star. Literally, because this was my first holiday location with a Michelin star! Every dish is an adventure of flavours and textures. Plus, each plate is a true work of art.
