Cas Contador

"Am I doing well?" Slowly, my fingers knead the stiff bread dough until there are no lumps left. "Yes, you're doing great." The owner, Marga, is smiling broadly at me while I stand behind the worktop in a chequered dark-blue apron, covered from head to toe in flour. "If you form it into a loaf, it can go straight into the oven." I let my hands slide through the dough one last time. It feels so good to be so busy. It is so soothing that I have to make an effort to keep my attention.

As my bread is browning in the oven, I sit with Marga and her husband Pedro on the terrace by the pool. In front of me is a glass of cava, from which I take slow sips, listening to the couple's story. "This finca, which was once a farm, has been in our family since 1927. My grandfather bought the farm and he and my grandmother grew lots of vegetables here. They also planted fruit trees and animals roamed the grounds. Cows, for example, and pigs. I like to revive some of that old history, which is why we have rebuilt the finca as naturally as possible. And those sheep are also a nod to the old days, haha." As if they understood what Pedro was saying, suddenly a loud BAAAAA rose from the meadow. This makes me laugh and I look around, at the 50,000 m2 of land. Everywhere I see little flowerbeds and cosy seating areas. How beautiful it is here.

While Marga is telling us how the renovation went last year and what has been preserved from the old farmhouse, I suddenly hear the oven. Ping! My creation is ready. Around the corner of the door, the smell of freshly baked bread floats by. This is going to be a treat.
