'Sometimes you need to take the unbeaten path!', I told Andres. We were driving down a little road that was unknown even to him, the eternal islander. The landscape was slowly becoming a bit greener, the view was improving as we got higher and higher up and the sea was spying on us from the distance.
I laughed when we arrived at the small town of Las Vegas. 'Not quite the gargantuan American version!' The owner, Maria, had been waiting for us. She told us all about the town consisting of just a couple of houses. ‘Everybody knows each other here. And the best part is’, Andres said, ‘This week, you’ll be one of us!’, I smiled and couldn’t wait. Maria let me choose: Casa Sofia or Casa Los Perez? I hesitated. Both were cosy, traditional town houses with a swimming pool, lots of privacy and a fenced garden. I went with the white Casa los Perez that awaited my arrival in the shade of a palm tree. The high wooden ceilings, designed in the style of the island, were the deciding factor. I fell in love with the playful niche of stone by the window and the chiringuito: a small outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and a picnic table. ‘Great, I'll be able to invite my neighbours for my first night in town’, I laughed.
So there I was, cooking for the neighbours who had gladly accepted my invitation. New people, new stories. There’s nothing quite like choosing a different route every now and then. Especially if you get to spend the night at one of the town houses.
